Overview
This article describes the steps required to enable Wake On Magic Packet for Windows 7.
To start, make sure you have all the settings for Wake on LAN (Local Area Network) turned on. There are several features you need to enable in different locations, and if any of these steps are skipped, WoL (Wake on LAN) does not work.
Process
- Go to the properties of the Ethernet port that is currently active and in use.
- Right-click the adapter in use and select Properties. This is open a new dialog box.
- Click on Configure.
- Under the Advanced tab, enable Wake on Magic Packet as shown in the image below:
- Under the Power Management tab, check the below checkboxes (see the image below):
- Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
- Allow this device to wake the computer
-
Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer
- Once everything is enabled for the Ethernet port, install the Windows service for WoL:
- Open Control Panel and go to Programs and Features.
- Once in the Program and Features window, click on Turn Windows Features on or off on the left-side menu.
- Install the TCP/IP service 'Simple TCPIP services' by clicking the checkbox next to it, as shown in the image below.
- Turn on the service 'Simple TCPIP services' by going to the Window Services located in the Administrator Tools.
- Open UDP (User Datagram Protocol) for port 9 within the Windows Firewall settings. In the Control Panel, select Windows Firewall.
- Click on Advanced Settings on the left-side menu.
- Click on Inbound Rules and then click on New Rule. This opens the New Rule wizard.
- Create a new port rule, and apply the rule to UDP port 9.
Once the setup is complete, make sure that the Wake on LAN feature is turned on in the BIOS, and in the router, a port forwarding rule for UDP 9 to the address of the machine in which Wake on LAN enabled.
For users to wake up a PC with WoL setup, they need to send a Magic Packet to wake the machine up. Most routers have the capability of sending these Magic Packet; however, if needed, you can do this through the command prompt or by using a third-party application.
The below information is required to send Magic Packet:
- Media Access Control (MAC) Address
- IP Address
- Port number
