Configuring Windows Firewall to Allow Web Components to Access the Server

Overview

This article describes the steps to configure the Windows Firewall to give web components access to the server.

Resolution

If you use Surveyor components to access the server through HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP), and Windows Firewall is enabled on the server, make sure TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) port 80 is added to the exceptions list.

You would need to access the server through HTTP if you do any of the following:

  • Enable Wake for Remote Access for your end users to wake their computers from home or another off-site location. Wake for Remote Access is an add-on component that comes with Surveyor

  • Administer the server from a remote computer; for example, as you would if you set up delegated administration.

To add a port in the Windows Firewall to allow web components, follow these instructions:

  1. In the server computer, navigate to Windows Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall.
  2. On the Exceptions tab, click Add Port.
  3. In the Add a Port dialog box, do the following:
    1. Type a name that indicates that the exception is for power management components (this name appears in the exceptions list).
    2. Specify port 80.
    3. Select TCP.
  4. Click OK, and then click OK in the Windows Firewall dialog box.

For additional information, refer to Add a Port to the Firewall Rules List.
