Windows 7 Clients Do Not Wake on Schedule

Overview

The Windows 7 power option settings include Allow wake timers. On Windows 7 laptop or notebook computers, this setting is disabled by default.

When Allow wake timers setting is disabled, the computer is not able to receive a scheduled wake request sent by the Surveyor server.

You may also see errors related to the Network Time Protocol (NTPor Win32Time services, other Userenv errors, or Group Policy failure entries.

Environment

Resolution

You can enable wake timers in Windows 7 using one of the following methods:

Method 1: Edit the Group Policy Object (GPO)

From an elevated command prompt, use the PowerCfg.exe tool to change the power policy:

Action

Command

Enable AC power

powercfg -setacvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_SLEEP bd3b718a-0680-4d9d-8ab2-e1d2b4ac806d 1

Enable DC power - battery

powercfg -setdcvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_SLEEP bd3b718a-0680-4d9d-8ab2-e1d2b4ac806d 1

Make the power scheme active

powercfg -setactive SCHEME_CURRENT

Method 2: Change the Windows 7 Laptop Computer Power Options Settings

  1. Click Start menu / Control Panel / Power Options.
  2. On the Select a power plan page, for the plan that you want to change, click Change plan settings.
  3. Click Change advanced power settings.
  4. Expand Sleep, and then expand Allow wake timers.
  5. Set both On battery and Plugged in to Enable.

Additional information

  • Disabling Allow wake timers can preserve laptop battery life, because the computer will not wake up for a scheduled event while on battery.
  • The Allow wake timers setting affects scheduled wake transitions only, not Wake on LAN.
