Pressing Power Button Does Not Wake a Computer

Overview

There are instances in which even though you are pressing the power button, the computer does not wake. This article provides relevant information to resolve this issue.

Information

When a computer in a sleep state does not wake when you briefly press the power button, the light on the power button can signal the type of issue that is preventing the computer from waking. In most cases, not being able to wake from sleep indicates an outdated video driver. See the below table with a complete list of signal, and its resolution.

Signal Indication Resolution
The power light changes from blinking blue or green to blinking red or orange. A piece of hardware is preventing the system from waking, i.e., the video card. Update the hardware or video card, or try a different video driver.
Power light changes to solid blue or green and the CPU starts, but the monitor does not wake (display looks
blank).
Conflict with the video card or driver. Contact the video card manufacturer to obtain the most up-to-date version.
Multiple monitors do not wake consistently or adequately, screens display incorrect resolution on wake, and so on. Conflict with the video card. Contact the video card manufacturer to obtain the most up-to-date version.

To ensure that you get the most up-to-date version of the video driver, contact the video card manufacturer rather than the computer manufacturer.

If the latest video driver does not resolve the wake issue for a computer, you can apply a policy to the computer that turns the computer off at night instead of transitioning it to sleep (make sure it does not transition the computer to sleep after a period of idle time).

If you use Wake on WAN (Wide Area Network), consider making this computer a preferred proxy, as proxy computers are always on.
