Searching with Wildcard Slows the Process

Overview

Adding a wildcard (* or ?) to a search key slows down the search process.

Environment

Active Paper Archive (APA)

Root Cause

  • Wildcard search is always heavier than regular search.
  • The wildcard is entered prior to the keyword.
  • The search process doesn't use any indexes for a match.

Resolution

  1. Suggest using additional filters (date, publication, etc.) to limit the search scope.
  2. Place the wildcard at the end of the keyword. Example: Use archiv* instead of  *rchive.
