Articles Can't Be Read By Text-To-Speech Software

Overview

This article will help us identify the steps when an article is not being read by the test to speech software. Sometimes, when an article(may be an obituary) is changed into an image, the text-to-speech software will not be able to read the article. These steps are for any article where the text-to-speech software is not working. This could be because the embedded text in the PDF was either broken, poorly encoded, corrupted, or non-existent.

Environment

Olive Dynamic Newsstand or any other device with text-to-speech software

Resolution

  1. Have the publisher select and copy text from the source PDF page.
  2. Paste the text into a text editor such as Notepad.
  3. If the content in the editor is non-legible and full of odd characters, then the encoding within the original PDF is terrible.
  4. Have the publisher redo the source PDF page and ensure the embedded text is not corrupted before sending to Olive. A good embedded text is readable, clickable, can be copied and searched.

Root Cause

The embedded text in the PDF was either broken, poorly encoded, corrupted, or non-existent.
